Reroute: What to Do When the Old Path No Longer Works
What happens when something you counted on is no longer available? A three-card reading inspired Reroute—a practical reflection on life changes, acceptance, new anchors and finding another way forward.
Sometimes the things that worked before simply aren't available anymore.
A relationship changes. A job ends. A friendship shifts. Your health changes what you can do. Family dynamics change. Something or someone you counted on is no longer there in the same way.
Our first instinct may be to push harder against the obstacle or wait for things to go back to the way they were.
But sometimes the old path really is closed.
A closed path is not a closed world.
That was the message that emerged for me from a recent three-card reading. It became the inspiration for Reroute, one of my short musical reflections from The Signal.
The Cards Behind This Signal
For this reading, I pulled three cards: Eight of Air, Queen of Earth, and The World — Archangel Michael.
Eight of Air speaks of the illusion of being trapped, a lack of self-confidence and being afraid to take action.
At first glance, that could sound as though the obstacle is simply in our imagination. But I don't think that's always true. Sometimes there really are circumstances we cannot change. A relationship has changed. An opportunity is gone. Someone has made a decision we cannot make for them. The old route may genuinely no longer be available.
The trap can come from believing that was the only route.
Queen of Earth brings the message back into practical, everyday life. Be thoughtful and sensible. Make time for the people around you. Deal with challenges with kindness and understanding.
Instead of putting all our energy into the path that has closed, we can look around at what — and who — is still here.
A neighbor. A friend. A new interest. Creativity. Community. A different routine. A place where our presence matters.
These things can become new anchors when the old ones disappear.
Then came The World — Archangel Michael, a card of completion, joy, contentment and gratitude.
For me, this card widened the view.
One part of your world can change dramatically without your entire world disappearing. There may still be people you haven't met, places you haven't gone, things you haven't tried and parts of yourself you haven't had reason to discover yet.
Rerouting Isn't Giving Up
There's an important distinction between giving up and recognizing what you cannot control.
Accepting that something has changed doesn't mean you approve of it. It doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. And it doesn't mean you didn't try hard enough.
Sometimes acceptance simply means you stop spending all your energy trying to move something that isn't yours to move.
Then you can ask a different question:
Where can I go from here?
That is where rerouting begins.
Take Care of Your Little Corner of the World
We are surrounded by enormous problems, and it's easy to feel powerless in the face of them.
But most of us were never supposed to fix the whole world by ourselves.
We can take care of our little corner of it.
Neighbors helping neighbors. Friends helping friends. Checking on someone. Making a phone call. Accepting help when we're the one who needs it. Offering it when we're able.
Those connections matter.
They also remind us that when old anchors disappear, we can build new ones.
